1. The Pole Dancing Doll

- Released: 2009

The Pole Dancer Doll was attached to a pole and came with a disco ball and disco lights to make the performance even more realistic.

The strange thing about the doll was that it looked like the normal type of doll that you would give to a young girl.

When the toy was switched on the doll would rotate around the pole, which caused a lot of offence to people and oddly enough it never became the hit that its makers wanted it to be.

It certainly wasn’t the perfect role model for young children!

2. Gay Bob – The World’s First Gay Doll

- Released: 1977

Gay Bob was brought to the attention of the public in 1977 when Harvey Rosenberg thought that it would help to create awareness and understanding for the gay community.

The doll was 13 inches high and has a pierced ear, blonde hair, tight jeans, flannel shirt and this was completed with cowboy boots. The dolls looks were said to be a cross between Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

As if Gay Bob the doll wasn’t controversial enough the box was in the shape of a closet.

It wasn’t all bad news for the doll though, as in 1978 Esquire magazine awarded it the “Dubious Achievement Award”.

3. The Reborn Life-Like Doll

- Released: 1990s

Reborn dolls are incredibly realistic dolls which look just like a real baby and are designed to be as true to life as possible.

These dolls have a large following around the world, but due to the their realism they have caused some problems.

In Australia for example a Reborn doll was left inside a car and worried citizens who saw it thought that it was a real baby locked inside. This prompted police to break into the car to rescue the ‘baby’.

4. ‘Shave the Baby’ Doll

- Released: 2009

Someone, somewhere, thought it might be a good idea to create a doll that you had to shave – other people did not think in the same way, but thankfully this was just a so-called progressive art piece that was never actually designed to go on sale.

The doll had hair on its ankles, pubic area, bottom, armpits and head and all of it was in a bright orange to attract even more attention to it.

Very bizarre to say the least!

5. Adolf Hitler Action Figure Doll

- Released: 2001

In terms of wrongness this is up there with the best, or should that be the worst?

The Adolf Hitler Action Figure is one of the most distasteful dolls that has ever been on sale.

The creators of the figure was Mike Fosella, a doll maker who also created a Joseph Mengele figure and has planned for more of these dolls to be released in the future.

The dolls were revealed to the world at the 2001 toy fair in New York and it’s fair to say that they caused a lot of controversy.

Fortunately the distasteful nature of the doll meant that very few retail stores decided to stock it.

6. The Racial Doll

- Released: 2009

This doll was meant to be aimed at the black market in America but it only served to anger people due to its racist tones.

On the hat of the doll were the words ‘Lil Monkey’ and to make matters worse when these dolls were put on the shelves of Costco they were alongside stuffed monkeys.

This racial slur incensed many people across the country and the dolls were soon removed from the shelves and were not sold again.

7. Pregnant Barbie

- Released: 2003

It’s a known fact that most parents dread the conversation about where babies come from with their children and in a misguided attempt to help parents Mattel created Pregnant Barbie.

How did it work? Well, the stomach of the doll could open and inside there was a baby ready to be born.

Parents did not take to this new addition to the Barbie family and the manufacturer soon took the dolls off the shelves so that they did not cause any more upset.

At least with this Pregnant Barbie doll the intentions were harmless enough, unlike the makers of the Adolf Hitler Action Figure doll. Nonetheless Mattel won’t be rushing out to do anything similar in the near future.

8. Oreo ‘African American’ Barbie

- Released: 1997

Mattel decided in 1997, six years before they released the Pregnant Barbie, that it would be a good idea to join forces with Nabisco and design the Oreo Barbie, a doll that was meant to be African–American.

The problem with the doll is that the word ‘Oreo’ is used by some as a description of a black person who tries to act like a white person.

As you would think this doll caused a lot of tension with the African–American population and it was withdrawn from the shelves. It has now become a collectors item.

9. Indian Doll with a Trashy Tongue

- Released: 2002

The Indian Doll with a Trashy Tongue was the creation of JDK products and it spoke in broken English and repeated a string of trashy and witty phrases.

While a lot of people thought the doll, who was called Patel, was amusing the Indian population who lived in the US did not see the funny side.

An online petition was created to stop the sale of the doll and it was successful.

The company who produced the doll have created many more offensive dolls that are based on pimps, the Chinese, rednecks and many more.

10. The Pro-Islamic Doll

- Released: 2008

The Cuddle and Coo Pro Islamic Doll was created by Fisher Price and it had an unfortunate set of phrases which included ‘Islam is the light’ and ‘Satan is king’ which caused a lot of upset with buyers and offended a lot of people, both Islamic and non Islamic.

Fisher Price withdrew the dolls from shops, although they did try to defend it by saying that the doll just made cooing and baby noises, but this failed to convince many of its vocal critics.

As always, the lesson is to be very careful when you mix dolls and religion!

11. Homeless Doll

- Released: 1990

Disney added a new Dick Tracy series doll to its collection with the Steve the Tramp doll in 1990. It was allegedly based on a true homeless person and had scruffy and dirty looking clothes.

His face and hands were covered in dirt and he had the tag line of “You’ll smell Steve before you see him”.

The doll caused tensions with homeless people and many started to picket the stores that were selling the doll and this led to him being removed from sale.

Mattel didn’t study history and followed this up in 2009 with Gwen the Homeless Doll, which unsurprisingly also sparked an uproar.

12. The Breastfeeding Doll

- Released: 2011

Bebe Gloton (in Spanish) or Greedy Baby as it was known in English was made by a Spanish company.

The idea behind the doll was to be educational, however the fact that the doll had to be breastfed by a child wearing a halter neck top with flowers for nipples was seen as very distasteful.

Parents did not feel that their children needed to know about breastfeeding at such an early age. Clearly the Spanish company didn’t worry about their market research before producing the doll!

13. The Murdered Toddler Doll

- Released: 2009

This is thought to be one of the most sleazy dolls that has been created by Jaime Salcedo, the man behind the Micheal Vick Dog Chew Toy.

The Caylee Sunshine Doll was based on a toddler, Caylee Antony, who was thought to be murdered by her mother and kept inside the boot of her car for some time before disposing of the body.

The public were disgusted by the doll which was not allowed to go on sale.

Right up there with the Hitler doll on the bad-taste scale, this was a bizarre invention and most likely just done for attention.

14. Rambo Doll

- Released: 1985

While the Rambo doll itself looks like the kind of thing you could buy anywhere today, when it was first released way back in 1985, when the Rambo movie came out, things were very different.

There was a lot of opposition to the doll as parents thought that it would incite violence in their children. As a result the doll did not do very well.

Today things are different and there are many toys that are similar and no one really complains about them.

This is the only doll on our controversial list which actually managed to withstand the public backlash and become a popular kid’s doll.

15. The Villain Action Figure

- Released: 1999

Released in 1999 and carrying a gun The Villain Action Figure really caused a huge storm thanks to the fact that the Columbine shootings had recently taken place.

The dolls looked like the Columbine killers as they were dressed in body armour, a ski mask and trench coat, and they also came with a rifle and shotgun.

The dolls were quickly taken off the shelves. However, 15 were actually sold and these are now classed as collectors items by fans of offensive dolls.

16. The World’s First Doll Penis

- Released: 1976

There was so much controversy when the Archie Bunkers Grandson doll went on sale, inspired by ‘All in the Family’ – a sitcom that had a character who was obsessed with anatomy, that it was quickly pulled from sale after going on the shelves.

The doll was based on Joey Stivic, played by Rob Reiner in the sitcom and was on the shelves in 1976 and was seen as the very first make doll that was anatomically correct and uncircumcised!
